Sports Innovation Leaders Gather in Milan for The Edge of Gold Olympic Summit
Sportinnovator and Nederlandse Loterij hosted The Edge of Gold – Milano Cortina Sports Innovation Summit at the Staatsloterij TeamNL House in Milan, bringing together international leaders from elite sport, science and entrepreneurship. The program explored how innovation turns potential into podium finishes, from broad motor skill development to breakthrough technologies on the road to Milano Cortina 2026 and Los Angeles 2028. The summit opened with remarks from Mascha Baak, Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Milan, who underscored the importance of European cooperation in sports innovation. Prof. Dr. Bob Heere hosted the program and delivered the opening remarks on how innovation converts talent into medals. This was followed by a short interview with organisers Harry van Dorenmalen, Chairman of the Topteam Sportinnovator, and Maartje Geven, Chief Technology & Innovation Officer of Nederlandse Loterij.
From Playground to Podium
The opening keynote was delivered by René Wormhoudt, CEO of the Athletic Skills Model and strength & conditioning coach at the Royal Netherlands Football Association. During his keynote, titled From Playground to Podium: The Key to Olympic Success through Broad Motor Skill Development, he demonstrated how versatile movement foundations shape elite athletic performance.
International sports startups, scouted through Sportinnovator and Nederlandse Loterij, presented their innovations followed by a panel discussion on Building the European Innovation Ecosystem. Moderated by Merit Clocquet, Sport Innovation Officer at Sportinnovator, the session explored how Europe’s sports innovation ecosystem connects startups, academia and elite sport to create impact at the grassroots level. Panelists Juan Fuentes Fernández, Director of Sports at GSIC powered by Microsoft and Co-Chairman of EBAN Sports, Bas Ticheler, Head of Corporate Communication and Brand at Nederlandse Loterij, and Martin Benko, Chairman of the Slovak Sport Innovation Center, shared insights on strengthening collaboration across borders.
Breakthrough innovations for Milano Cortina 2026
The afternoon program continued with a fireside chat featuring international Olympic athletes, including snowboard champion Nicolien Sauerbreij, who reflected on how innovation shapes elite performance. During the session The Last 3%, Dr Inge Stoter, Director of the Thialf Innovation Lab, and Martin Benko, CEO of MBCD Sport Innovation Ltd. and Chair of the Slovak Sport Innovation Center, showcased breakthrough innovations developed for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, highlighting the marginal gains that define success at the highest level.
Maurice Ouderland, Program Director World Cup 2026 and Sports Diplomacy Lead at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the United States, presented Unlocking Olympic Potential for LA 2028, a collective call to action to keep investing in innovation on the road to Los Angeles.
The Edge of Gold: internationale sportinnovatie centraal tijdens summit in Milaan
Sportinnovator en Nederlandse Loterij organiseerden vandaag The Edge of Gold – Milano Cortina Sports Innovation Summit in het Staatsloterij TeamNL Huis in Milaan. Internationale leiders uit topsport, wetenschap en ondernemerschap kwamen samen om te bespreken hoe innovatie olympische prestaties versnelt, van breed motorisch ontwikkelen tot technologische doorbraken tijdens Milano Cortina 2026.
De summit werd geopend door Mascha Baak, consulaat-generaal van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in Milaan, die het belang van Europese samenwerking op het gebied van sportinnovatie benadrukte. Prof. dr. Bob Heere leidde als host het inhoudelijke programma en ging in gesprek met Harry van Dorenmalen, voorzitter van het Topteam Sportinnovator, en Maartje Geven, Chief Technology & Innovation Officer van Nederlandse Loterij, over hoe innovatie sportprestaties naar het podium kan brengen.
Van speelplaats naar olympisch podium
In zijn keynote liet René Wormhoudt, CEO van Athletic Skills Model en kracht- en conditietrainer bij de KNVB, zien hoe brede bewegingsvaardigheden bijdragen aan olympisch succes. Onder het thema From Playground to Podium benadrukte hij het belang van veelzijdig bewegen in de ontwikkeling richting de top.
Verschillende internationale sportstartups presenteerden aansluitend hun innovaties, gevolgd door een paneldiscussie over het bouwen van een sterk Europees sportinnovatie-ecosysteem. Het gesprek stond onder leiding van Merit Clocquet, Sport Innovation Officer bij Sportinnovator. Innovaties voor Milano Cortina 2026
Tijdens een interview sprak olympisch snowboardkampioen Nicolien Sauerbreij over de rol van innovatie in topsportprestaties. In de sessie The Last 3% presenteerden Dr. Inge Stoter, directeur van het Thialf Innovation Lab, en Martin Benko, CEO van MBCD Sport Innovation Ltd. en voorzitter van het Slovak Sport Innovation Center, baanbrekende innovaties die zijn ontwikkeld voor de Olympische Winterspelen van 2026.
Maurice Ouderland, Program Director World Cup 2026 en Sports Diplomacy Lead bij de Nederlandse ambassade in de Verenigde Staten, sloot het inhoudelijke programma af met een oproep om innovatie structureel te blijven benutten op weg naar de Olympische Spelen in Los Angeles 2028.
